Junior Freestyle World Championships in Airolo

The Junior Freestyle World Championships return to Airolo.

Nestled in the heart of the Alps, Airolo-Pesciüm has been a driving force of freestyle skiing in Switzerland for more than two decades. From hosting the Freestyle World Cup in 2004, to the Junior World Championships in 2007, and the World Cup again in 2018, Airolo has helped shape some of the most memorable chapters in freestyle history over the past twenty years.

From 19 to 22 March 2026, Airolo will once again take centre stage on the international freestyle scene, hosting the Raiffeisen FIS Freestyle Junior World Ski Championships for the second time. This prestigious annual event will bring together more than 100 of the world’s top young athletes, aged between 15 and 20, representing over 15 nations. Competitors will go head-to-head in Moguls and Aerials at the Raiffeisen Freestyle Arena, all chasing a single goal: the Junior World Champion title. For these young athletes, taking part in an event of this calibre is not only a top-level sporting challenge, but often a crucial stepping stone towards the World Cup circuit, World Championships and the Olympic Games. Competition start on Thursday, 19 March, while the official opening ceremony will take place on Friday, 20 March at 6:00 pm in Piazza Motta, Airolo. A celebratory event set to officially welcome athletes, delegations and freestyle fans arriving in Airolo from every corner of the world.

Hosting this competition is about much more than organising on a sporting event. It’s a chance to reaffirm Airolo as an international hub for freestyle skiing and to show the same passion for sport that’s been alive here for over twenty years.

Competition Disciplines

During four days of competition, athletes will compete in five disciplines at the Raiffeisen Freestyle Arena: Moguls, Dual Moguls, Dual Moguls Team Event, Aerials, and Aerials Team Event.

  • Moguls: In Moguls, athletes race down a course covered in bumps, performing two jumps on each run. Scores are based on bump technique, the quality and difficulty of the jumps, and overall speed. Moguls has been an Olympic discipline since the 1992 Albertville Winter Games.
  • Dual MogulsDual Moguls sees two athletes skiing simultaneously on parallel mogul courses. As in Moguls, judging criteria include technique, jumps and speed. The athlete with the higher overall score advances to the next round. Dual Moguls will make its Olympic debut at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games.
  • Dual Moguls Team Event: In the Dual Moguls Team Event, teams consist of one female and one male athlete representing the same nation. Each matchup includes two runs on parallel courses: woman versus woman and man versus man. The scores from both runs are combined, and the team with the highest total advances to the next round. This discipline is not currently part of the Olympic programme.
  • AerialsAerials features acrobatic jumps performed off a snow ramp. Athletes are judged on three key components: air (take-off, height and distance), form (execution and precision) and landing. Aerials has been an Olympic discipline since 1994.
  • Aerials Team Event: The Aerials Team Event is a team competition in which squads of three athletes (with at least one athlete of each gender) each perform one jump. Individual scores are awarded based on air, form and landing, and combined to determine the team total. The team with the highest score wins. The Aerials Team Event has been part of the Olympic programme since 2022.
